Singer, songwriter, and guitarist
Marco Figueira was born in the musically rich Minas Gerais region of Brazil, but has lived in New York City since 1988. While his music is still obviously a product of his Brazilian upbringing, the influence of his adopted home is also clearly audible on this, his first album for the
Blue Toucan Music label. The New York influence is most explicit on tracks like
"Vem Cá" (with its rockish guitar solo played by session great
Hiram Bullock) and the straight-ahead
jazz groove of
"Minha" (with its old-school string section). But the more traditionally Brazilian tracks are the ones that succeed most completely, and these include the fun and rollicking
"Preta-Porter de Tafetá" and the quietly brilliant
"Águas de Março." Figueira's scat
vocalese on
"Amizade" is particularly nice, as is the slow and sweet
"Romance," heard here in a vocal version and a second instrumental version as a bonus track closing the disc. A delightful album.
