Modeselektor take the baton from
Matthew Dear, who put together the seventh volume in
Get Physical's
Body Language mix series, and serve up a disc that is, unsurprisingly, one of 2009's more omnivorous dance mixes -- albeit one that incorporates a heavy dollop of dubstep. Like the duo's 2007 contribution to
Bpitch Control's
Boogybytes series, the mix is not
quite ADD-addled; the tracks, on average, play out for around two minutes, and there's a healthy disregard for stylistic cohesion. A handful of three-track sequences are worth singling out, but the best of all comes early on, with
Rustie's playfully menacing and correctly titled
"Zig-Zag" leading the way to the instrumental version of
Missy Elliott's choppy
"Lick Shots" and
Osborne's throwback to
Daniel Bell's early-'90s productions as
DBX -- a bleeping, blipping, limb-flinging homage to a star of Detroit's low-budget
New Dance Show program.
