Aaron Spelling's
Beverly Hills, 90210 arrived in 1990 like a wrecking ball, tearing down the TV tradition of dowdy,
Degrassi-style teens, and paving the way for an era of short skirts and sex talk. The two-part debut
Class of Beverly Hills sees the Walsh family -- teenage twins
Brandon (
Jason Priestley) and
Brenda (
Shannen Doherty), parents
Cindy (
Carol Potter) and
Jim (
James Eckhouse) -- move from small town Minnesota to California's epicenter of luxury. The culture shock may be intense, but the twins can dig it; during their first days at West Beverly High, they make fast friends with the spoiled (but somehow charming)
Steve Sanders (
Ian Ziering), the incredibly popular
Kelly Taylor (
Jennie Garth), the naïve-but-fashionable
Donna Martin (
Tori Spelling), the hard-driving overachiever
Andrea Zuckerman (
Gabrielle Carteris), and, of course, the smoldering bad-boy,
Dylan McKay (
Luke Perry).
Season one tracks the twins' west coast adjustment in tandem with a number of coming-of-age events: Brandon considers cheating to keep his grades up (
Higher Education), the gang throws a party that results in a drunk driving accident (
B.Y.O.B.), and Brenda and Dylan consider sleeping together after a formal (
Spring Dance). Even the adults occasionally get a piece of the drama, especially in
The 17-Year Itch, when Cindy Walsh flirts with an old flame. These initial 22 episodes plant the seeds for issues that will be explored over the 10 seasons to come, including Dylan's alcoholism and Kelly's experience with sexual abuse.
