If
Antidote is any indication, Denver's
Gamits just may be America's best hidden
pop/
punk secret. Sans the
emo-whine and overt studio shine that's come to plague the underground, frontman
Chris Fogel succeeds on good judgments. Launched with
"Dotted Lines," the
Gamits put their best foot forward in a song that hybrids
Cheap Trick's hooks (
Fogel's pipes are reminiscent of
Robin Zander) with the power of the
Foo Fighters. Solid
rock is in ample supply thanks to
"How to Escape" and the contagious, ferocious
"Golden Sometimes," yet the band also succeeds in the jangly mid-tempo realm of
"Open Window." Sometimes the force is misdirected, however, as
"Curious Vanessa Black" suffers from an aimless repetition, but the soothing acoustic apology
"Bridges" rights that wrong. The late album anthem
"Bloodstains/Picture Frames" asserts the
Gamits -- complete with the crack rhythm team of bassist
Scott Swarers and drummer
Jason Walker -- are a power trio of the highest order.
