The third volume of
Rhino subsidiary
Flashback Records'
'70s Radio Hits series is focused on the late spring and summer of 1970, presenting ten Top 40 songs that entered the charts in that period, four of them gold records. Many of the artists are one- or two-hit wonders:
"Tighter, Tighter" was
Alive and Kicking's only Top Ten hit, as was
R. Dean Taylor's
"Indiana Wants Me," and the Top Five, gold-selling
"In the Summertime" is the only chart entry
Mungo Jerry ever scored. For
Edwin Starr,
"War" was one of only two Top Ten
pop hits, and the same thing is true for
Sugarloaf and
"Green-Eyed Lady." The other five acts,
R&B stalwarts
Ike & Tina Turner, teen idol
Bobby Sherman,
soul music perennials
the Spinners, and early-'60s comeback stories
Gene Chandler and
Brian Hyland, were more substantial
pop stars, but not by much. Thus, these songs are sometimes better known than the artists who recorded them. Those who were listening to AM Top 40 radio in the summer of 1970 will remember them, and others may discover some pleasant, if weightless,
pop music.
